 Whomi Blog

So you have your degree, you’ve finished a couple of internships and now it’s time to get serious about landing that dream job. The trouble is, the job market is more competitive than ever before. There are more people looking for work than there are jobs available and as a result, it can be almost impossible to stand out from the crowd. However, that doesn’t mean that you can’t crack the code and land your dream job… You just need to think outside of the box. Getting a job might take some ingenuity, but with the right approach, it’s absolutely possible. Here are ten tips that will change your life if you follow them when hunting for career opportunities. Whether it’s networking or making sure you have an eye-catching resume, these pointers should come in handy if you want to land a dream job sooner rather than later.

Network, network, network…

If you want to get a job, you need to know someone. The reality is that the majority of jobs are found through personal connections. Whether it’s through the Whomi network, your family, your friends, or through your professional connections, you need to be building your network. No matter how amazing your skills are, if no one knows about them, they are not getting you a job. In this day and age, it’s so important to be active and visible on social media and career coaching platforms. You need to be showing your face and engaging in conversations. You can’t just hide behind your computer screen and expect to find your dream job. You need to be creating a network for yourself that will be able to help you in your future career. You need to be engaging with people and being visible on social media. You need to be finding like-minded people who can help you along your journey.

Develop your soft skills

You might be particularly skilled in a certain area, but if you don’t have the soft skills to back it up, you’re not going to get very far in your career. Unfortunately, a lot of schools don’t teach soft skills, but if you want to land your dream job, you need to have them. What are soft skills? They are the non-technical skills that are crucial in the workplace. These include communication, team work, time management, self-discipline, etc. Employers place a lot of importance on these skills, as they are necessary for just about every job. You can improve your soft skills through practice, reading books, taking courses, and working with a career coach. You can also make sure that you put these skills at the forefront of your resume. Even if you are applying for an entry-level position, make sure that you are highlighting your soft skills.

Show off your hard skills

You also need to show off your hard skills. These are the technical skills that you possess. The more advanced and technical your skills, the better. Employers love hard skills, as they are easy to identify and assess. You can list your hard skills on your resume, as well as in your cover letters. If you don’t know what your hard skills are, you can find out by making a list of your past jobs. Think about the skills that you used in each job and what you learned while working there. If you’ve had a couple of jobs, you might have a few hard skills that you’ve developed. For example, if you’ve worked in retail, you’ve probably learned how to handle customers, as well as how to put things on shelves.

Ask for recommendations and referrals

Now, it’s not always appropriate to ask your current boss or co-workers to write you a reference. In fact, it can be incredibly awkward. However, if you’ve worked with someone who you know is in a position to help you, you should ask for a recommendation. If you’ve done an internship, you might have gotten to know your supervisor pretty well. You might even be friends with them on social media. Asking them for a recommendation can help you tremendously in your search for a job. Be sure to keep it professional, though. You don’t want to come across as desperate. You want to be humble and let them know that you would really appreciate it. If you have worked with someone who is in a position to help you and you’ve built a good relationship with them, you should also ask for a referral.

Make your own opportunities

You might want to get a job in a specific industry. However, if you want to stand out among the crowd, you need to make your own opportunities. For example, you might want to work in marketing. However, if you live in a small town in the middle of nowhere, it might be difficult to find a job in that industry. Instead of waiting around for the opportunities to come to you, you can create your own opportunities. Network to find people in your industry, and then offer to work for free. You can also offer to do some free consulting work for an agency or business in your desired industry. Doing some pro bono work will get your name out there, and it will also help you to build relationships. Through these opportunities, you can demonstrate your skills, which will help you to stand out in the crowd.

Join an alumni group or networking club

You might want to consider joining an alumni group or networking club. These groups can be particularly helpful if you are trying to break into a new industry. You can make connections with people who work in different industries and will be able to share your skills with them. You should also be available to help other members. You can also try to start your own networking club online through a platform like LinkedIn. The more people that you are connected to, the more opportunities you will have.

Landing a dream job takes more than showing up to work on time, being a hard worker and doing a good job. You need to be strategic in how you approach your job search. You need to set yourself apart from other job seekers. Follow the six tips above, and you will be well on your way to getting your dream job!
